C. P. Dorland was a historian and member of The Historical Society of Southern California. He wrote what is probably the first researched history of the Chinese Massacre. Dorland’s account is short but mostly accurate with a few mistaken identities. He erroneously states that Yo Hing married Ya Hit (Yut Ho), instead of Lee Leeung: “He [Hing] persuaded the woman to secretly marry him and then, coming into lawful possession of her, he had the law and the sanctity of the marriage rite to strengthen his title.” Dorland also states that “Ah Choy stood at the porch in front of the Coronel Block and emptied his pistol at the crowd, which by this time was gathering.” Even though Ah (Won) Choy was laying wounded in a doorway of Beaudry’s building across the street.
